The Avro Lancaster was the RAF's most famous heavy bomber during World War II and entered service in 1942. More than 7,300 machines were built for the Royal Air Force Bomber Command. One of the most important goals of the RAF was the destruction of the dams in the Ruhr area, which supplied important industrial plants with electricity. To achieve resilient goals such as To effectively hit dams or dams, a dam-bursting rotary bomb, more commonly known as a bouncing bomb, was developed. A new unit was created especially for this attack, the 617th Squadron, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Guy Gibson. Under the code name Operation Chastise, this attack took place with 19 Lancaster bombers on the night of May 16-17, 1943. The first two dams - Möhne and Eder - were successfully destroyed, while the other two, Ennepe and Sorpe, withstood the attack.
