The four-engined Avro Lancaster was without a doubt the most famous of all RAF heavy bombers of World War II. It formed the backbone of the night bomber offensives deep in Germany from 1942 and gained fame through the sinking of the Tirpitz and the destruction of the Möhne and Edertalsperre. The Lancaster was able to carry bomb loads of up to 9,980 kg, the heaviest single bomb being the Grand Slam. It served in 68 RAF Bomber Command squadrons until 1945 and flew more than 156,000 sorties. Of a total of 7,300 machines produced, almost half were lost during these missions. Today only two airworthy copies remain, one in Great Britain and one in Canada.
